I was on the road and friends were playing something I hadn't heard before. I stole a few of those tracks for this mix. This one goes all over the place so its hard to narrower it down to one particular genre, so with that said dip and expect nothing to be surprised.
This is a shorter than normal mix and for those unfamiliar with this "drifters" series, it is a collection of ambient music. What else can I say, if you want something mellow to listen to, potentially to sleep to this is your mix.
This one was made largely because a friend of mine introduced me to Rhye and I felt humbly grateful for the exposure and wanted to return the favor. So with that said I made a mixtape to complement Rhye's fantastic album, Woman, as well as make something very much new.
With Jazzanova, Bent, Kings of Convenience, The Amazing, Oliver Blank, Rhye, King Krule, Paolo Nutini, Champion, Tropics, BBS, Sharon Van Etten, Richard Hawley.
I know, Panties. It just needed to be called that. I mean the last "sexy" mix I made was called, Drop Trou. So this seems to follow suit by saying, well you have dropped your pants now its time to drop your underwear. I really don't want the title to throw you off and have you think this mix is not worthy of your time or that I'm a disgusting pig. I just want you to have fun, to really get into the groove. Maybe play this at a party or at the bar you might work at, play it at church if you go there. It's the kind of music that you could imagine some club playing but instead they often play songs that are too house (deep house?), that they may lack some flavor. I think I got your fix with this one.
It was just hearing Airglow Fires by Lone, then Can't Do Without You by Caribou one night stoned and in a sort of chamber, with you, that night, and rather than going into a dark circle I imagined being in some warm place where there is no one else. And then I heard Versions by Moderat and I just shit the bed. It took me months and a lot of research finding all the songs on this mix that complement those three tracks that were on repeat throughout my summer.

Please enjoy this labor of love.BrendanGeorgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05277624279316548866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7420399895593755599.post-52205432316252812322014-10-04T07:27:00.003-07:002014-10-04T11:14:01.450-07:00Dreamscape

After hearing Julia Holter's Maxim I I wanted to carry that song in its own soundscape with songs that complemented it. With this mix I wanted to create a space feels like a dream, the songs are full of atmosphere, are soft and hover while never touching down but floating just above the surface. I sat on my mission to make this mixtape for more than half a year, compiling songs and letting new discoveries help fill the gaps.
Though I consider this mixtape to be the usual sort that is made (having contemporary music usually ranging from indie to electronic) it holds its own.

-it is the second mix of this year and will be the last of its kind for a while (with ambience, dreamscape, and trip-hop mixes on their way)
-it has a few songs from artists I had a hard time including them in mixes (because I loved their albums as wholes)
-the energy in this mix is all over the place (in a good way)
-there are some goddamn gorgeous songs
-there is also a really nice cool-down, mellow, late night vibe in the middle
-you can expect the following: The War on Drugs, Bill Callahan, King Krule, Radiohead, Angel Olsen, Bibio, Courtney Barnett, Beth Gibbons of Portishead, Four Tet, Au, Mutual Benefit, Glasser, Jenny Hval, Cock & Swan, Ariel Pink, The Sea and Cake, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Melody's Echo Chamber, and Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse

That's that.
Get your groove on with this evening champion. After six years of compiling music I finally got down to creating this mix and only managed to get through half of it. When this half ends it just ends and leaves you waiting for the next half which will pick up where this one starts. (not sure when that one will be done, but I've already started on it)

This is a bit of a throwback in terms of music, it is entirely trip-hop and electronic jazz from the early 2000s up to a few recent tracks. Similar to a past trip-hop mix, Space/Time Continuum, I introduce this track myself. You can expect the likes to be included: Tom Tyler, Butti 49, Yppah, Jazzanova, 4 Hero, Shigeto, Unforescene, The Cinematic Orchestra, Kid Loco, Woob, Jed and Lucia, Washed Out, Dr Rubberfunk, Skalpel, Coldcut, Siktransit, Bonobo, Fila Brazillia, DJ Cam, DJ Krush, The Seatbelts, Gentle People, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Tor, DJ Shuriken, and Brian Green and Saul Nathan.
The last mix of the year and things went different. I decided just before my trip to Hawai'i I need some adventure music. I had safari in my head at first, but Hawai'i is not a safari, it's a bit of desert, tropical rain forest, alpine, and lava fields. The title comes from Robert M. Pirsig's ZAMM when he described a journey he was embarking on with his son and two friends. The journey was about revisiting the environment of his past in order to relearn who he once was. How the story unfolds is both entertaining as well as informative. The chautauqua of early 20th Century America were exactly that, nomadic, informative, and entertaining. Now I'm not sure where this mixtape stands in regard to that theme, but it is filled with terribly beautiful music from all around the world with a huge soft spot for West African folk music and Afropop. When I close my eyes I think of this soundtrack as the soundtrack to any roadtrip, adventure, journey through a landscape that breaks into moments of the sublime. The selection of music is so far out there in comparison to my usually mixes that I am omitting the artist list here, you'll have to just trust me on this one. If anything it will warm you up during the cold months of winter.
I forgot to make this mix last year so here's making up for two years. Unlike previous years this mix doesn't reflect all the sounds I had been hearing throughout the summer, instead it is particular to a sound and pace. I've been playing too many of my mixes on roadtrips only to realize that they might be a bit mellow for the mood so I did some adjustments on this one. The list of artists on this puppy is well-ranged and there's a fair amount of repeaters. I'll just ask you to trust me on it because I'd like it to be more of a surprise. SURPRISE!

Enjoy it, have fun with it, go skinny dipping with it on in the background but make sure you have loud enough speakers to hear it just enough to enjoy the moment you are having with your naked self as well as to have a soundtrack for it. Go, be freeeeeeeeeee!
I think this might be the ideal mix for a roadtrip as the tracks on this one seemed to speak to a flowing landscape complete with passing trees and barns slowly being passed from a distance. Lots of jams that keep going until climax and rich mellowness to follow. I'm doing a horrible job describing this mix so you should probably just bare witness.

Complete with Broadcast, Elbow, Bloodstone, Orcas, Ivy, Junip, Ensemble, Julian Lynch, Kurt Vile, Mac Demarco, Karen Dalton, Ned Collette, Phosphorescent, The Amazing, Cock & Swan, The War on Drugs, Beth Gibbons (of Portishead), and Here We Go Magic.
I wanted to challenge myself with this one. I wanted to swing all over the place and take you on a journey. You go from experimental modern classical to chamber pop to folk to pop to electronic to chill wave to trip-hop to lo-fi to contemporary singer-songwriter to alternative to psych-folk to minimalist pop to electronic folk to americana to electronic rock to indie to post-rock to chill wave again before trip-top again and finally some hard-to-define Clark with a layered ending that brings you back to the beginning.

With Patrick Watson, M83, Flying Lotus, Mum, Ensemble, Tropic, Clark, Prefuse 73, Yo La Tengo, The Helio Sequence, Ned Collette and Wirewalker, Groove Armada, El Perro Del Mar, Heather Woods Broderick, Jonny Greenwood, Thom Yorke, Moonswift and Sand Snowman, Elbow, The Gentleman Losers, Cass McCombs, and that's it.
There's only two songs with vocals (maybe three, but I'm pretty sure the third is just wordless vocals), there isn't a lot of upbeat, builds that find epic climaxes, nor are there any pop tunes to carry the mix along its three hour journey. This mix is the rare opportunity I give myself to make an ambient and quiet mix that eases more than it pleases. It is my C H I L L O U T session and it is complete with,
Unlearn, Ass, Silver Pines, Aphex Twin, Aus, Lisa Gerard and Pieter Bourke, Funki Porcini, Lisa O Piu, Cock & Swan, Vieo Abiungo, Beggin Your Pardon Miss Joan, Pieter Nooten & Michael Brook, Cliff Martinez, Brian Eno & Harold Budd, Gustavo Santaolalla, A Winged Victory For the Sullen, Orcas, Patrick Watson, Morelenbaum & Sakamoto, Hans Zimmer, Clark, and Stars of the Lid.
After finishing Smokey Face I had a challenge to make a mixtape that still felt fresh, as diverse as that last one, and to also out do myself. I owe a lot to a certain mix by Jazzanova and and another one by Bent that blew me away at mixtape perfection. As per usual I take you on an acoustic journey from harsh harmonic electronic sounds and distortions to a beachy pop dream then washing that away with a darkly-lit scene deep in the woods and there comes the bridge. We come out of that with a smooth-at-the-same-time crunchy sounds of electronic music then rock then jazz rock then new wave then alternative rock and then it ends on a good note before concluding....music by Thom Yorke, Jed and Lucia, Taken By Trees, Patrick Watson, Here We Go Magic, Sun Kil Moon, The Chemical Brothers, Tortoise, Dymaxion, Bibio, Tim Knol, My Autumn Empire, Clark, Beggin Your Pardon Miss Joan, Cathy Davey, Spectrals, Bob Marley, Future Islands, Roxy Music, Destroyer, Jens Lekman, Rachel Grimes, and The Walkmen.
The latest mix, SMOKEY FACE, is a regular chilled out album with music spanning genres and even has a Deftones song thrown in there. The direction of this mix is kinda wild and untamed, and harder to describe so you should probably just listen up and get your own idea from it.

Music by Clark, Cocteau Twins, Ensemble, Cock & Swan, Holy Sons, Jim O'Rourke, Au, Quasi, Here We Go Magic, The Nocturnes, M83, Deftones, Daniel Rossen, The Clientele, Beach House, Spiritualized, Lower Dens, Yellowbirds, Oneohtrix Point Never.

Mainly new music from artists that normally don't have any association with each other so it's interesting to hear them playing alongside each other. Dig in.
From the summer of 06' to the summer of 07' I had become the Polynesiac. I stopped working on the sequel to my first solo album, The Killegal: Morbidal View, for trip-hop music. I had this whole concept going with tropical electronic-hip-hop music and would sample or create all my loops. In the end I finished half the album and made this mixtape, which I introduce and close personally as The Killegal.

With that said, enjoy the lovely Tom Tyler along with Skalpel, Alan Moorhouse, Fila Brazillia, Red Snapper, Les Gammas, DJ Krush, The Cinematic Orchestra, Boys Band Trio, The Seatbelts (of the Cowboy Bebop fame), David Holmes, and Yesterday's New Quintet.
I hope you're ready for it, because it is going to slip right underneath you and you will slip and just maybe fall if you aren't. For those who are ready here's the last mix I finished, and it comes to you with warmth that could only be from the heart, that sweaty bloody organ that never stops from the moment you're born to the moment you die (or had too much fried chicken and you were scared by some hoodlums).

With voices from Cass McCombs, Wilco, Holy Sons, Future Islands, Anna Calvi, Beach House, The Dears, Asobi Seksu, Girls, Junip, Laura Gibson, Jim O'Rourke, an 1970's Italian prog rock band called Latte E Miele, M83, Grimes, DJ Cam, Tennis, Bill Bragg, and more (yes, there's more).

What a wicked line up, dig it. Come'on.
Expect nothing alarming, nothing to make you run faster, but expect something to help you sleep, relax, chill, whether on an airplane flying to some island in the middle of the pacific or a subway train going to work, this mix will help you settle down and take a breather. I haven't made a mix like this, usually weeding in ambient tracks here and there, using them as hidden well before bringing things back up to the lively surface. No, this puppy is a solid ambient vacation, taking some of my favorite in the genre and throwing a time-less vessel of over eighty minutes into the mix. Dig in.
BrendanGeorgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05277624279316548866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7420399895593755599.post-28045527818632878992011-09-04T21:33:00.001-07:002014-02-16T15:06:21.776-08:00Dark Dark Crazy(July 26, 2011)
No problem right now with making mixtapes, in fact, check back soon to check out some more. This is full of good stuff, I think you'll it, and the next couple.

From what I remember it starts off with a bang, it holds this pace for a while, then climaxes, and the mix goes into a mellow slow-going pace for the second half. This mix is longer than a cd-r, if you have been burning them for a roadtrip, better bring the ipod on this one. And the next for that matter.
